The masquerade tradition reached its fullest expression in Venice, where masked balls and public masking became central to the city's cultural identity. In England, the masque — a related court entertainment featuring elaborate costumes, music, and allegory — became the dominant aristocratic art form in the early 17th century. Ben Jonson and Inigo Jones created spectacular masques for the Stuart court, combining poetry, architecture, and theatrical machinery in performances that could cost as much as a warship.
The figurative meaning of masquerade — a pretense, a false show — emerged naturally from the literal practice of disguise.
