Iconic New York delis — Katz's, Carnegie, and the Second Avenue Deli — became cultural landmarks that transcended their origins as immigrant grocery shops. The classic deli scene in the film When Harry Met Sally (1989) demonstrated how deeply the deli had embedded itself in American cultural consciousness. Katz's Delicatessen, founded in 1888, has operated continuously for over 135 years, making it roughly contemporaneous with the word's first appearance in English — the institution and the vocabulary arrived together.
The Latin root deliciae (pleasures) also gave English "delicious," "delight," and "delicate."
