The word kerosene is one of the relatively few English words whose inventor, date of coinage, and naming rationale are precisely known. It was created in 1854 by Abraham Gesner (1797-1864), a Canadian physician, geologist, and inventor, from Greek κηρός (kēros, wax) combined with the chemical suffix -ene (denoting a hydrocarbon). Gesner chose the name because the distillation process that produced the fuel also yielded paraffin wax — the kēros — as a byproduct.
Gesner's invention had revolutionary consequences for human civilization. In 1846, he publicly demonstrated that a clean-burning, bright illuminating fuel could be distilled from coal (and later from petroleum), and he patented the process and the name kerosene in 1854. The petroleum industry itself was largely driven in its early years by demand for kerosene. When Edwin Drake drilled the first commercial oil well in Titusville, Pennsylvania, in 1859, the primary product sought was kerosene for illumination. Gasoline, which would later become the petroleum industry's most valuable product as the automobile transformed transportation, was initially considered a dangerous and largely useless byproduct of kerosene refining.
The terminological geography of kerosene is notable. In North America, kerosene is the standard term. In Britain and many Commonwealth countries, the same product is called paraffin or paraffin oil. In aviation, kerosene-based jet fuel is designated as Jet A or Jet A-1. These different names for the same substance reflect the parallel development of petroleum terminology in different English-speaking regions.
Abraham Gesner's contribution to civilization is often underappreciated. By creating an affordable illuminant and giving it a name drawn from Greek, he helped launch the petroleum age, transformed daily life for billions of people, and coined a word that has been adopted into virtually every major language in the world.
