The Etymology of Fascism
The word "fascism" traces to Italian fascismo, coined by Mussolini's movement in 1919 from fascio ("bundle, group"), descending from Latin fascis ("bundle").βββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββ In ancient Rome, the fasces β a bundle of birch rods bound around a protruding axe blade β were carried by lictors attending magistrates, symbolizing the state's power to discipline and execute. The rods represented collective strength: one rod snaps easily, but a bundle is unbreakable. Mussolini chose this imagery deliberately, casting his movement as the revival of Roman power. The fasces symbol had already appeared in the French Revolution and on American government buildings β the Lincoln Memorial features fasces on the chair β but Mussolini made it his own. Italian fascismo entered English as "fascism" by 1921.
